NAN RED code name given to a part of the beach where the troops landed (today La Croisette)

NORTH SHORE REGIMENT

(New Brunswick - Canada)

The first to land was the “B” Company followed by the “A” Company, it was  about 7:40 AM - the purpose was to reach the « strong point » from the south, moving up along the beach and the road behind.

Arrived on the spot at St Aubin sur mer the soldiers found  more resistance than thought. A  75mm gun controlled the area (is not in today) and a 50mm casemate directed south (still in today). They were  linked by a system of underground galeries.

To face those difficulties a AVRE (Churchill tank) was called up, tried to get trough a roadblock Rue Canet but had to withdraw to take “la Rue Foch” then “la Rue Gambetta”.
A second tank got through the roadblock Rue Canet and attacked the gun.
At about 6:00PM the 6th June 1944, the  « strong point » was cleared.

The 48th Commando of Royal Marines

50mm gun

Directed southward in the direction of the road, not of the beach. This orientation,  which can seem strange, protected the gun of the shootings coming from the sea and allowed it to cover streets Canet and Pasteur and to take in row the beach and the dike, in the East as on the West.
