The Natural Geological Reserve of Cap Romain The Cap Romain takes its name after the relics of Roman and Gallo-Roman activities that are present at its top. The numerous artefacts discovered on the site, such as the statue of the Goddess Mother found inside a Roman well, are exposed in the tourist office.
The main interest of this site is to present a cliff with fossilized sponge reefs typical of a tropical sea-life during Jurassic period, as well as a set of Quaternary deposits witnesses of the lasts glaciations. The cliff puts in light these events of the regional geological history between 160 million years and today.
As a hudge outdoor museum, the cliff and the rocky beach are precious but fragile witnesses of earth’s history. It is thus necessary to protect this heritage for the future generations.
